President of the St Mary Chamber of Commerce, Agriculture and Industry, Frederick Young, and his entire executive were returned unopposed to serve another two-year term at the organisation’s annual general meeting (AGM) on Monday night at the Casa Maria hotel in Port Maria.
“Thank you for giving us one more term to serve you even better. On behalf of the newly elected members, we will ensure we deliver, and if we don’t, hold us to our commitment,” Young said after the team was returned.
Young said that the chamber was prepared to work with the police and other organisations for the betterment of St Mary.
In his report, the president said six members of the chamber visited Cuba last year to seek further collaboration in the areas of education, agriculture and health. Arising from this visit, the Cubans are expected in the island to conduct training sessions on how to build greenhouses for farmers in the parish. Residents of the parish are to continue benefiting from medical services provided by the Cubans.
Going forward, Young urged support for the chamber.
Vana Taylor, president of the St Ann Chamber of Commerce and area chair of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association, outlined the role of the chamber and encouraged the business sector in St Mary to become part of the organisation.
“The success of any chamber is directly linked to its membership base,” Taylor pointed out.
